Psalm 8 interrupts the enemy sequence with wonder. After accusation, violence, and the courtroom of God in Psalm 7, this Psalm lifts our eyes to the heavens and teaches true humility: we are no more than Mortals of Dust, and no less than remembered, attended, and loved by God. In this episode, we pray with the Messiah, the Son of Man, who receives responsibility beneath the Majesty of YAHWEH, showing us that dominion is not domination, but love, care, and harmony under God’s Glory.

Psalm 8 interrupts the enemy sequence with wonder. Psalm 7 brought accusation, violence, and Justice into the courtroom of God. Psalm 8 lifts our eyes to the heavens, the moon, the stars, the work of God’s fingers, and asks what human beings are for.
This Psalm is framed by praise: “YAHWEH, our Lord, how Majestic is Your Name in all the earth.” Everything about human vocation is held inside the Majesty of God.
Not domination.
Not arrogance.
Not control.
There can be no domination when there is awe.
In this rendering, “Mortals of Dust” comes from the Hebrew adam, the human one, the earth-being, closely connected to adamah, the ground or soil. The Psalm is not insulting us. It is locating us. We are ground-formed, breath-given, fragile, remembered, and attended by God.
The Psalm then asks a more focused question: “What is the Son of Mortal Dust that You attend to him?” For followers of Jesus, this draws our attention to the Son of Man, the Messiah. The one who receives all things under his feet is not generic humanity in its arrogance, but Jesus in his faithful humanity.
Psalm 8 does not offer creation to human domination. It reveals the Messiah’s vocation. The Son of Man receives what is sometimes translated as “dominion,” but he receives it in wonder, humility, responsibility, and self-giving love.
This Psalm can restore true humility: knowing our place before God, no more and no less.
May YAHWEH lift your eyes from fear into wonder.
May the Holy One restore your dignity without feeding your arrogance.
May the Messiah teach you responsibility without domination.
May you know your place before God, no more and no less.
May the praise of children make the Destroyer and the avenger Still.
And may you live in harmony beneath the Majesty of God’s Name in all the earth.
