Psalm 42 opens a new movement of the Psalms with thirst. A worshiper remembers joyful processions to God’s House, but now eats tears and hears the question, “Where is your God?” John, Ramona, and Paula pray with the singer’s longing, the waves that have passed overhead, and the song YAHWEH gives in the night. They consider the Dark Night described by St. John of the Cross and the value of listening carefully with a spiritual director. “Hope in God” is spoken while the singer’s Being is still bowed down. Today’s prayer is: “My Being Thirsts for You. Hold my Night Song.”
Psalm 42 begins Book II of the Psalms with a deer longing for water and a person longing for the living God. We pray with the memory of worship, the question “Where is your God?”, and the refrain “Hope in God.” We also consider the Dark Night and how spiritual direction can help us listen carefully to a season of spiritual thirst.
