What do we do when someone seems determined to harm us, misrepresent us, or celebrate when we stumble? Psalm 35 begins on a battlefield. Shields are raised. Spears are drawn. The one who prays asks YAHWEH to rise and fight on their behalf. Yet right in the middle of this fierce language comes an intimate plea: “Say to my Being, ‘I am your Rescue.’” The Psalm gives anger somewhere to go besides retaliation. It makes room for false accusation, betrayed compassion, and the desire for vindication without requiring us to pretend the harm did not happen. Praying Psalm 35 with Jesus, we hear the Messiah who knows hatred without cause, false witnesses, and distorted stories, yet refuses to become the mirror of his accusers. The battle is real. But it does not have to take over our inner life. YAHWEH has seen. And beneath every accusation, the Being can still hear: “I am your Rescue.”
