Psalm 33: The Horse Is a Lie for Rescue

Episode Summary

What do we trust when we are afraid? Psalm 33 gathers the community to praise, then turns toward the things human beings trust for Security: kings, armies, strength, and horses. Its verdict is startling: “The horse is a Lie for Rescue.” Our horses have changed. Weapons. Money. Political influence. Technology. Reputation. Control. Each may have a proper place, but none can bear the weight of becoming our Rescue. Psalm 33 offers another imagination. The Word of YAHWEH creates the heavens. The earth is full of Persistent-Love. And the people of God learn to wait together rather than panic together. For followers of Jesus, the creative Word draws our attention toward the Messiah, who refuses coercive power and forms a community around enemy-love, shared bread, service, and Peace. This Psalm invites us to ask what we reach for when fear rises, and to place our deepest Security where the Psalm places it: in the Persistent-Love of YAHWEH.
