What do we do when it feels like someone else holds our life in their hands? Psalm 31 knows the fear of damaged reputation, fractured relationships, grief in the body, false accusation, and a future that seems vulnerable to other people’s decisions. Yet right in the middle of that distress, the one who prays says: “My times are in Your hand.” This is not trust after the suffering has ended. It is trust from inside the suffering. Jesus himself prays the words of Psalm 31 from the cross: “Into Your hands I commit my spirit.” Surrounded by violence, shame, rejection, and death, the Messiah entrusts himself to the Father. Praying Psalm 31 with Jesus, we learn that other people may affect our lives, but they do not finally possess them. Our reputation, future, timing, grief, and Being can be entrusted to the God who sees, knows, hears, and holds us in Persistent-Love.
