Psalm 12 narrows the enemy’s weapon to speech. The danger is not only swords, arrows, or visible violence, but smooth lips, double hearts, manipulation, contempt, and language detached from Faithfulness. In this episode, we pray with the Messiah in a world where words have become weapons, asking YAHWEH to dismantle the Lie’s ability to pronounce itself and to form us in speech that protects the poor, guards trust, and strengthens Faithfulness.

YAHWEH, purify our speech.
Guard us with Your Faithful words.
Psalm 12 narrows the enemy’s weapon to speech. Psalm 10 named predation. Psalm 11 named hidden arrows in the dark. Now Psalm 12 listens to the danger of smooth lips and double hearts.
The Psalm contrasts two voices: the voice of the Liar and the voice of YAHWEH.
The Liar says:
“With our tongue we will prevail.
Our lips are with us.
Who is lord over us?”
YAHWEH says:
“Because of the devastation of the poor,
because of the groaning of the needy,
now I will rise.
I will set him in the Rescue he longs for.”
The Liar uses words to dominate. YAHWEH uses words to rescue.
When Psalm 12 asks YAHWEH to “cut off all smooth lips,” this is not brutal violence. It is sacred disarmament. Like the breaking of teeth in Psalm 3, the image is about disarming the predator’s bite. Here, the cutting off of smooth lips is about dismantling the Lie’s ability to pronounce itself.
The Lie needs articulation.
The Lie needs slogans.
The Lie needs flattery.
The Lie needs repeated phrases.
The Lie needs lips that say, “Who is lord over us?”
Psalm 12 asks God to interrupt the enunciation of the Lie and guard the community with words that are pure, refined, faithful, and true.
In the Messiah’s voice, Psalm 12 is the Beloved crying out in a world where words have become weapons. Followers of Jesus are invited to notice that participation in God’s kingdom includes surrendering weaponized speech.
This Psalm can help a community recognize flattery, manipulation, exaggeration, and contempt as forms of violence. It can invite repentance for the ways our own lips seek power. It can restore trust in the words of YAHWEH when public language feels polluted. And it can form a community whose speech protects the poor and strengthens Faithfulness.
May YAHWEH rescue you when words no longer feel safe.
May the Holy One guard you from smooth lips and double hearts.
May God purify your speech without shaming your voice.
May the Messiah teach you words that protect the poor and strengthen Faithfulness.
May the Lie lose its power to pronounce itself over your life.
And may the pure words of YAHWEH Keep you to the Eternity.
