Psalm 11 asks what the Aligned one can do when the foundations are destroyed. From the perspective of Babylon, empire, and any place where a people’s memory, worship, belonging, and hope have been shaken, this Psalm teaches us to take refuge in YAHWEH rather than be governed by panic. In this episode, we pray for courage that does not imitate violence, trusting the God who sees, Tests, rejects the love of violence, and holds us when foundations shake.

YAHWEH, be our refuge.
Hold us when foundations shake.
Psalm 11 asks what the Aligned one can do when the foundations are destroyed. Psalm 9 praised YAHWEH as the Secure Height for the crushed. Psalm 10 cried out, “Do not stand far off. Come with Your saving Justice.” Now Psalm 11 brings us into the moment when everything feels unstable.
The pressure is to flee. Sometimes leaving is wisdom. There are times when escape protects life. But Psalm 11 is listening for the deeper panic beneath the advice: “Flee like a bird to your mountain.”
We can hear this Psalm from Babylon, from the belly of empire, from the place where Jerusalem has fallen, the Temple has burned, families have been torn apart, and the foundations of a people have been systematically destroyed. We can also pray this Psalm from the personal places where life feels upended: when trust collapses, when a diagnosis arrives, when a church fractures, when a family system unravels, or when the assumptions that held life together no longer hold.
In the Messiah’s voice, Psalm 11 is the prayer of the Beloved who refuses panic when foundations shake. Jesus knows what it is to stand in a world where the foundations are unstable. He lives under empire. He sees powers bend the bow and shoot in the dark. But Jesus does not flee into self-protection, and Jesus does not fight on fear’s terms. He takes refuge in the Father.
This Psalm uses the Hebrew word bachan, meaning to test, examine, prove, or assay, the way metal is tested. This is not a quiz. It is not a snapshot of whether we are strong enough. It is formation under the eyes of God. YAHWEH’s testing is the searching mercy that exposes false refuges and forms us again in Alignment.
Psalm 11 also says that the Twisted and the lover of violence are utterly rejected by God’s Being. This is not God being petty, reactive, or cruel. It is the whole Being of God rejecting violence. God cannot make a home with the love of violence. God does not bless the archer in the dark.
This Psalm can help a community remain grounded when institutions, trust, or social foundations feel broken. It can expose the temptation to let fear make the next decision. It can form courage that does not need to imitate the archer in the dark.
May YAHWEH be your refuge when the foundations shake.
May the Holy One see every arrow shot in the dark.
May God steady you when fear tries to make the next decision.
May the Messiah teach you courage that does not imitate violence.
May YAHWEH reject the love of violence in us and around us.
And may the upright behold His face.
